Remember, remember the 5th of November...

No dia 5 de Novembro por cá festeja-se a captura do Guy Fawkes...e quem é o Guy Fawkes?, perguntam vocês! Guy Fawkes pertenceu a um grupo de homens que a 5 de Novembro de 1605 tentaram explodir as Houses of Parliament. O motivo destes homens era a tentativa de assassinato do rei, que pretendia continuar a perseguição aos católicos britânicos já levada a cabo antes da sua subida ao trono. Esta tentativa falhou, tendo os conspiradores sido capturados, torturados e assassinados. Desde essa altura que no dia 5 de Novembro se festeja o fracasso da tentativa deste grupo queimando figuras de Guy Fawkes e lançando fogos de artifício (e também balões de S. João).

Alguns de vós se lembrarão do filme "V for Vendetta" que adapta uma banda desenhada inspirada neste acontecimento. O filme conta a história de uma sociedade totalitária em que um homem se inspira na figura de Guy Fawkes para lutar contra o poder opressivo.

On the 5th of November the capture of Guy Fawkes is celebrated throughout England...and who is Guy Fawkes? He was part of a group of man that on the 5th of November 1605 tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. This man's intention was to kill the king who intended to keep persecuting British catholics as his predecessor did, This attempt fail and the conspirators were caught, tortured and killed. From then on on the 5th of November effiges of Guy Fawkes are burnt and there are fireworks.

Some of you may remember the film "V for Vendetta" that adapts a graphic novel inspired in this conspiracy. The film tells the story of a totalitarian society where a man takes Guy Fawked example to fight opression.

Mais um dos meus sítios preferidos cá na cidade...Desta vez o pretexto foi a exposição temporária dedicada ao Gauguin. Pelo caminho descobri também uma série fotográfica um pouco bizarra, mas muito interessante, "People of the 20th century" de August Sander (que também já terá passado pelo Met http://www.metmuseum.org/special/August_Sander/Germany_more.htm)

One more from my favourite places in the city...This time, the reason for the visit was the Gauguin exhibition. While wandering around found a somewhat bizarre, but very interesting collection of photos by August Sander entitled "People from the 20th century" (it seems it has also been in the Met http://www.metmuseum.org/special/August_Sander/Germany_more.htm)

Union Chapel, mais uma sala de espectáculos Londrina, uma sala bastante particular por sinal. Nesta pequena igreja convivem o culto religioso, os concertos de música que vão desde o Fado ou da música clássica ao Rock, a projecção de filmes, e tudo o mais que possamos imaginar!

Union Chapel, one more venue in London, and a very particular one. In this small church the religious service shares its space with music concerts that go from Fado or classical music to Rock, film projections, and all that you can imagine!

Faust - The Young Vic

Quando cá cheguei e fiz a minha primeira pesquisa dos espectáculos que estariam em cena durante a minha estadia, o que mais me chamou a atenção foi esta peça de teatro...o Fausto, que neste caso é uma adaptação livre do clássico por uma companhia islandesa, tinha críticas fantásticas e era musicado por, imaginem só, Nick Cave e Warren Ellis. Sendo o Nick, um dos meus músicos favoritos, e tendo em mente as suas sempre fantásticas colaborações com o Warren Ellis, esta peça tornava-se cada vez mais imperdível! E não é que quando me lembrei de comprar bilhetes, logo no início do mês de Outubro, já todas as exibições que terminavam no dia 31 do mesmo mês estavam esgotadas. :(

Tratei de averiguar se haveria alguma forma de arranjar bilhete...Todos os dias de espectáculo no The Young Vic a partir das 10 h da manhã encontram-se à venda um reduzido número de bilhetes, a preço também reduzido - infelizmente, a essa hora estou a trabalhar e com a tamanha procura de bilhetes, concerteza não chegariam à hora a que eu lá podia dar um salto! Então, só se houver desistências de algum espectador no dia do espectáculo, apareça por cá...E lá fui eu, no primeiro dia da última semana de exibição da peça e...CONSEGUI!!! :D

When i arrived in town and first searched for the shows that would be on during my stay, the one that most caught my attention was this theatre play...Faust, that in this case is an adaptation from the classic by an Icelandic theatre company, it had wonderful critiques and music by no other than Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Be it that Nick is one of my favourite musicians and all his collaborations with Warren Ellis are magnificent, this play became even more unmissable! But, when I tried to buy tickets, right as October started, all performances of the play til the end of its stay in London in the 31st of October were sold out. :(

I tried to find out if there was any possible way I could get tickets...In The Young Vic, in every performance day, there is a reduced number of tickets sold at a reduced priced which they begin selling at 10 am - unfortunately at that time I'm working! So, the only possibility is if someone gives up going to see the play, so come buy to see if there are any tickets returned...And so I did, in the first day of the last week of performances...and I GOT IT!!! :D
